HI, I'M PAINTS AND PENCILS

View My Work

The process of my capstone started as a challenge to paint things which at the time were challenging; doing figures with arms, legs, etc. was a learning process at the start of this class.  The theme of the piece came along during the making.  My process is a bit slow at first, for I’m not always sure of the message or meaning behind my work until the brush hits the canvas. It is there when I learned that I wanted the piece to reflect change in a natural way, but also allow the viewer to interpret their own meaning as well.

The theme of the piece came along during the making.  The idea itself started with a ‘what if.’  What if this arm was a different color? What if it was holding something, but what? A tree? But how do I make a tree special? Maybe by letting it do something. Once the leaves started falling, I had down an idea of a nature in the form of a person and thus, my Mother Nature theme was born.  I use this method because it leaves more room for error, keeps my ideas new and the process a little more adventurous.  That way even during struggle and puzzling moments, there is still satisfaction found through the work.

Mother Nature

The project itself was inspired by a challenge to create a 'Body of work': to make a series of body parts on separate canvases, then piece them together as one.  If this were to hang in a gallery, it would look like a giant human on the wall with a landscape in place of the torso.  I kept the idea itself more vague to leave room to tinker; I knew during the making of this piece, there would be parts that won't flow well with the whole and had to leave wiggle room for errors.

That's the main reason also why I took the use of many pieces; if i don't like the way an arm looks, I can simply repaint that one part, and not risk interfering with the rest.  I kept the extra arm and leg, not just because I risked an arm and a leg to get here, but more that mistakes can turn into something beautiful and something to learn from.  Even though I didn't place them in the center with the whole piece, they were still part of the process.  I stuck with the nature theme because I felt it left an inspiring flow.  Upon finishing the landscape, I wanted to make the rest of the piece carry some of those elements.  I thus thought of making nature into a person
